897048 low 300x200 BEWARE facemoods scam is bullyware!

I am aware of some of the tricks used to persuade people install malicious software.  It is rare that I get caught but at times I can be gullible too.

It was my turn this morning, and it took a couple of hours to recover from my lack of vigilance.  I don’t suppose facemoods will want to cover that cost though (consider the many hours of productivity lost worldwide down to scams like these).

Fortunately not many organisations take the nasty bullyware approach to business like facemoods. What they hope to gain from such tactics mystified me until I read a complaint by someone called Yang from facemoods in response to complaints flooding in to the Firefox add-on reviews page.  He said “We have millions of users worldwide“.  A cynic would say they have managed to bully millions of users into installing their conware.

He goes on to say the addon is offered 100% free but he’s not telling the truth.  His software replaces adsense publishers codes with his own.  That’s right, he’s hijacking content owners reason for publishing.

Not only have they replaced search engines with a poor quality copy affiliate page (and thus benefiting from the affiliate income any ad clicks they produce) they replace many affiliate links with their own thus hijacking the income from bloggers and other organisations that have worked hard to produce a reputation and good rankings.

Wait a minute – say that again – what do you mean facemoods hijacks income?

bware BEWARE facemoods scam is bullyware!
Yes, its important to understand this.  If you own a blog and earn an income from affiliate revenue, facemoods is hijacking your income.  How does this happen?  Its so easy it’s embarrassing but let’s give you a real world example:

Let’s say you are a famous blogger, and your subject is dog training.  You love dogs, take photos every day, create video and podcasts, and help people with all aspects of dog training, grooming, behaviour therapy, and you are accepted as a leading authority.  To cover the cost of your work and the expenses you have you make book and DVD recommendations and gain a small commission through Amazon for each purchase people make.

I buy a lot of books and I love the idea that I reward the blogger who has taken the time to review the book by purchasing from the link on their page.

This has become the de facto standard method for rewarding bloggers and content providers for their efforts and facemoods thinks it ok to steal it.

So if Mr Yang’s boast of “millions of users” is true then he is making an absolute killing through deceit and dishonest practices.  Hardly 100% free.

Is this really happening?

Those of you familiar with Adsense are going to ask “Surely Google know about this and stop it?” I don’t know but what’s the incentive for Google to do that?  They proved they do not care much for their adsense publishers when they cut 90% of the commission income, and it hasn’t stopped Mr Yang from trying.

Did you know Adobe pre-loads itself each time you start your PC with the default installation?  This presumably so when you call upon it the results appear fast, make them look good.

Capture 300x195 How to open PDF files without Adobe ReaderIn the mean time other applications fighting for memory are robbed of this resource.  If you are not a heavy user of the reader then the overall effect is to slow your productivity.

They also add a bit of code that checks each time you tart your PC to see if they have any new updates so frequent interruptions to update their sloppy application is necessary too.

I have been using Adobe Reader a couple of times a month but had as many as 20 requests to update it.

Adobe Reader is slow to load (even with its pre-loader) when compared to Foxit and Nitro PDF Reader so I find it difficult to see why so many of us promote their free reader over other free readers.

My preference is for Nitro, it looks better, has the functionality I want, is not supported by ads or any other interrupting messages and works on the same principle as Adobe, if you like it and want more features there is a pro version.  Take a look at something new and rid yourself of the slow performing Adobe Reader here: http://www.nitroreader.com/

stinks1 How to fix Microsoft Lifecam Cinema out of the box problemsA raft of software, drivers and functions load each time the cam attempts to do it’s thing, and this causes numerous problems in other software such as Skype and Microsoft’s own Windows Live Movie Maker, here are a few examples:

  • After a week of perfect operation the sound failed to synchronise with the video in any software (Skype, Movie Maker, Camtasia, Sony Vegas).
  • In Skype the video output randomly switches from Standard Display to Wide Screen.
  • Warning messages appear stating the processor is to slow to record 640 x 360 on a Quad Core 2.4Ghz with 3GB RAM with Skype the only running application.
  • A ‘Focus Frenzy’ caused the Skype recipient to ask me to switch the webcam off as it made them queasy!

The solution is to uninstall Microsoft Lifecam software.  You do not need to do anything else, leave your cam plugged in.  Go to the Control Panel, uninstall the software and then reboot the machine.

Everything works as it should do, the cam fires up when requested through Skype or other software and you can modify the webcam settings as usual.

Firefox is a memory hungry SOB that performs like a slug crawling through molasses, but its still a primary browser.  Why? because Chrome does not have the same list of extensions and its not IE.

So we continue to put up with the ever increasing number of problems it presents us.  This morning the status bar disappeared.  This handy slice of screen real estate has been home to a couple of tools for the best part of the last five years, namely Firebug and Fiddler.  Two tools which I cannot live without and their other browser versions pale in comparison.  So here’s how to recover your status bar when it decides to go AWOL.

How to recover a missing status bar in Firefox

  1. Close all open copies of Firefox
  2. Give it a while, especially if you are on a slow PC, Firefox garbage collection is slow.  Open the Task Manager and check there are no running instances in the  processes tab if you are neurotic (if you do not clear the last remnants of FF from memory things will just get worse).
  3. Start ->Programs -> Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)

When Mozilla starts in safe mode you will see the following screen:

Safemoderesettoolbars How to restore the status bar in firefox

Select “reset toolbars and controls” then “Make Changes and Restart” and your status bar will return.

2478716 blog How to avoid intrusive adverts on MSN Messenger<rant>
Just lately the animated ads have been getting on my nerves, before they existed only at the base of the main contact list but they have been added to the conversations too now.  That, for me is a move to far so I set out to find out how to rid myself of the interrupting little bastards (by the way, any advertiser reading this;  on the web, use animated graphics and sound and you lose my interest immediately and I will make a point of seeking out alternative products that do not waste their money on ads).
</rant>

Set your security to high. Trouble with this method is so many sites just won’t work that it really isn’t an option.  This is the advice found on eHow.com, I am not sure eHow.com they figure this is a solution but for me this hits file 13 before I give it a try.

A-Patch is a serious contender. This will remove all ads and as they elegantly point out:-

Note: To remove the image ad banner in the conversation window, untick the “Show expanded footer in conversation windows” option under the Tools > Options > Messages window in the Windows Live Messenger options.

Useful advice if you don’t fancy patching.  The patch is easily applied and enables you to refine several of the rough features imposed by the MSN developers (this is a swipe at a bunch of programmers who appear to have put effort into making a product hard to use).

The patch can be downloaded from http://apatch.org/

Use an alternative client. I have used a few and prefer www.pidgin.im as it is available for Linux and Windows.  It also works well from a stick, see http://portableapps.com/ for all-in-one solutions that include Pidgin.

841838 low 194x300 Upon My Word This New Ribbon Just Gets Worse! It’s tempting to begin calculating how much more time it takes to work with the latest version of MS Word. As I have to run a time sheet I recorded the time I began this morning, and the first job of the day was to add the “SavedDate” and “RevNum” variables to “To Do List.docx”. Two versions ago this would be a simple case of selecting these fields and adding them to the document, a two minute Job.

Half an hour later and I still did not have these in my document. I know this sounds daft, I can barely believe it myself, but because I had consciously added the time to my time sheet I can be absolutely sure the exact amount of time taken from start to closing the document was 32 minutes and 13 seconds.

I have now gone through each ribbon methodically and the “Field…” option that used to sit under the “Insert” menu does not exist anymore. Not on any of the ribbons.

The only way to get access to the Filed menu option I could find was to right click the ribbon and customize it.

So what? Why didn’t I do that 30 minutes ago? Well I was under the impression this new ribbon feature was supposed to make things easier so I wanted to work with it, find the benefits.

Sadly, I just cannot do it, clearly set in my ways and not likely ever to get to grips with it. Sad ‘ol codger as my kids will say.

As an aside this took just over 2 minutes to write, add photo and save, +1 for WordPress.

whs 300x211 Are you happy with your backup strategy? As a software developer with hosting development and management experience its not unusual for me to be asked to help someone who has lost a file. There are three places a backup can sometimes be found:-

1. There is a proper backup strategy in place.
2. An adhoc backup may include a copy, to find these think outside the box, did you zip it up and email it to someone?
3. A deleted file can be restored or pieced together from file cache or fragments not yet overwritten.

I am surprised at the number of hosts that do not perform backups. Some will offer extra disk space so you can do it yourself for a fee, some will handle backups for you for a fee, but few do it automatically. The rule has to be If you do not maintain backups then its unlikely anyone else will.

Relying on your programmers has some merit but you should not rely on it. Programmers don’t like to write their code twice and so we find a way to automate the process to ensure we have the best possible solution.

The best backup strategy
Any backup strategy is better than none but if you want an easy to use and cost effective solution to backup several PCs/Macs/Mobiles as well as your hosted applications then check out Microsofts Home Server. It requires a separate PC to operate but nothing special. This is one of those applications you hear little about. It’s not expensive and is really good at what it claims to do (see this link for the sales pitch).

Expanding the amount of disk space available is as simple as plugging in a new external USB drive. So you can dig out those discarded drives and use them as additional space. Home server not only keeps a backup but you can use it to store important items such as photos and videos and it will make duplicate copies, so if a hard disk fails all you need to do is throw in another and it will take care of duplicating the files again for you.

Access to TV, music and all you media is available 24/7. Connect it to your wirelss router and the process of sharing your media around the house really does become straightforward.

Backup for business
I have a few offsite Linux servers, some more than 4,000 miles away. Home server backs these up every day and retains as many versions of those files as you think is convenient. By default you can recover any file up to 3 months old but I have extended this to 12.

Zdnet found 10 projects Google should kill after the demise of the Wave beta yesterday.

  1. Google Buzz. What was that anyway?
  2. Orkut.  I honestly never visited the site unless by mistake.
  3. Friend Connect.  Not sure I have heard of this either, what was it or will it be?
  4. Google Desktop.  I install and deinstall this regularly.  I love it, I hate it.  I sleep better without it.
  5. Google Base.  Isn’t that where all the chiefs meet?
  6. Google Checkout.  Ahh, now I know about this one, I developed an API for shopping cart software and their API really does suck.  As a consumer I refuse to use them.
  7. Google Toolbar.  I use it and like the way it allows me to click through keywords in searches, and I use the spelligna chhecker.
  8. Google Lattitude.  Don’t they mean attitude?
  9. Google Pack.  Huh?  What do they pack?
  10. Photo Screensaver.  Not another one, surely this is innovation at its thinnest?

SMS and mobile phones were not as popular in 1995 but from this short (and excellent demonstration of how a demonstration should be done) you can see a modern incarnation of the service, one we were told would never find a market.

Although Twilio and OpenVBX are nothing to do with RealCall I wish they were, the quality of the work demonstrated in this video encourages me to think the time is right for a rethink on some of our pre Adeptra strategy. The XML used in the demo uses the same principle tag used in our own XML API.

I do not think we need to reinvent the wheel but unless Twilio decide to bring this to Europe fast they may face strong competition.

On Monday Adam and I released PalRelay.  It is a solution to finding information without having to navigate the rats nest of irrelevant information often found in search results.

It is not a replacement for searching, its an enhancement that will reduce the number of irrelevant pages found by with the leverage of opinion from friends and colleagues.

It also solves issues that have been headlining recently.  Taking control of your privacy and retaining ownership of your social graph.  PalRelay allows you to decide who gets to know you and how they use that data.  It allows you to remain completely anonymous yet should a website request personalization privileges you can choose whether to allow it or not.

The impression that personalization is universally a bad thing is a decision each individual has to decide.  I like the idea that Amazon tailors its website to my likes and dislikes.

PalRelay acts as a gatekeeper to your personal information and can be used to stop commercial organisations from surreptitiously recording personal information.  Equally it solves the privacy issue by allowing you, the owner of the private data to decide who gets to see it and use it.

PalRelay goes everywhere with me except secure pages (SSL addresses beginning with https such as online banking pages).  Its useful while blogging too, see the following short video for an example:
