broken windmill 150x150 Circular Walk Somerton Winterton and Horsey MereThis 10 mile walk begins in West Somerton, about 8 miles from Great Yarmouth. West Somerton has a round towered church with an artistic dedication to Robert Hales inside. Robert was born in the village in 1820, grew to 7 feet 8 inches tall, weighed 32 stone and worked in the circus.

SDC11110 300x200 Circular Walk Somerton Winterton and Horsey MereBehind the church, facing south west from the car park, is a single large wind generator. Later on the walk you will see many more.

You walk toward Winterton-on-sea and then turn left and walk over heather covered sand dunes. Signs warn you to watch out for Adders, the only poisonous snake we have in the UK, but the only one I saw was dead, and flat, and on the road.

Later you walk along sandy beach with some stone shingle similar to that on Suffolk beaches. On the day I walked Seals were enjoying the warmth of the sun on the sand.

There are a few mills and picturesque homesteads typical to Norfolk and Suffolk and of course, the obligatory country pubs, which surprisingly remain open despite brewery cutbacks. Wind mills that once grind corn now provide an attractive break to the flat countryside and small canals and estuaries providing hidden adventures and interesting photo ops for those afloat and on foot.
