It has been a heck of a long time in the asking but at last Google have gone a small way into preventing those sites that fill their results with trash, see http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/hide-sites-to-find-more-of-what-you.html for more detail.
Perhaps now they have that out the way they can do something about the overwhelming amount of time wasting rubbish that continues to plague them. This morning I was curious about the cost of rail between Stuttgart and Ditzingen and no matter how I worded it I just got pages and pages of hotel information.
I’m fed up with searching, it’s about time someone invented a “Find Engine” instead. Google is not the only culprit, here’s what I got for all three:

have you tried disallowing the term “hotel”
You don’t know what to disallow until after the search has happened. These websites use black-hat techniques to get their sites in your face and none of the search engines, not even Google, deal with it properly. They should because these organisations can afford to pay for advertising. The search engines lose revenue and annoy the people who drive the revenue for them, so this remains a complaint that needs to be dealt with still. 14 years since Google launched and the only change to search results is more to find, and more spam. A simple search like “rail stuttgart to ditzingen” should return just that, no wiki entries, no stuttgart or ditzingen visitor websites and no hotel information, it should return rail focused websites between stuttgart and ditzingen and not need -hotel to clean it up.
